Rotary Club: a club that is known for its college benefits, but what else does it offer?
Rotary is one of the biggest service organizations in the world and has been long established in Ottawa.
“It’s cool for opportunities because they are happening locally and internationally,” sponsor John Atchley said. They focus on a lot of charity work such as collecting shoes and donating them to people that don’t have them across the world.
“Every year we collect Christmas gifts and donate them. I like that I get that opportunity to do service and be aware of what is going on, not only in the city, but around the world,” senior Avi Higgins said.
The Rotary Club values the wellbeing of others, which includes the members of the club. People in the club get the opportunity to meet others with the same standards and goals as them. There is a sense of belonging in the club. “I joined because I like the idea of doing charity with others and learning their story,” junior Ava Weatherford said. “I enjoy the fact that it keeps me in touch, and I get to learn new skills,” sophomore Wes Weatherford said.
One of the greatest advantages is not making yourself look good for college applications but getting connections. “Kids can attend rotary meetings, and they get the chance to meet professionals in the area,” Atchley said. Many professionals are involved in Sunrise, Noon and Marseilles Rotary, which sponsor the high school club. You could be sitting across from the owner of local small businesses or professionals and get a job that way. There are countless benefits.
