With AI becoming accessible as it is today, many school aged people have been using it for anything, and it just takes one click of a button to do so.
Many students are lacking the motivation to even do work anymore because a robot can easily do it for them. So what’s the point? Students use AI in a variety of ways. Some use it to do their math homework, or some use it to write essays for them. AI has become such an ingrained part of our society that everyone is desensitized to it.
Nowadays you can find AI anywhere if you are to search for something on Google. The first thing to pop up is an AI overview of what you searched for. There have also been many apps for using AI for students to use, or some are even using it as a tool to talk to.
So how does all this AI use affect youth? The (American Psychological Association) APA says AI has many biases because of its lack of testing and development. APA says AI was also made by humans, so it’s not very kid friendly. The APA warns against the dangers of AI: “AI can produce inaccurate information in new ways that have the effect of making many users believe the information is true, requiring adolescents to be especially vigilant.” The misuse of AI can lead to increased risk of depression, anxiety and even thoughts of suicidal behavior. An anonymous source said, “I think AI has had a huge impact on this generation, and it’s so integrated into our everyday life that no one even bats an eye anymore.
While some might say AI is taking over kids’ lives, others might argue that it’s a helpful tool to use. The APA said, “Educators should integrate AI literacy into core curricula, spanning computer science, social studies, and ethics courses.” The APA says AI can help students brainstorm, summarize, and organize information.
Math Teacher Kevin Francis said, “I am not a big fan of AI in Schools. AI will solve entire equations for you, but if you don’t bother to learn the steps properly, you can’t get the answer without really knowing how to solve it.” Francis goes on to say how his daughter wishes to be an illustrator to children’s books, but her job is in danger due to AI.
