“I’m mean, but I’m not that mean,” Overocker often says. This is reflected through her teaching and through her other hobbies.
Overocker teaches with a level of strictness, but she still leaves room for jokes. “She teaches sternly and makes sure you’re paying attention,” senior Korbin Cepaitis said. She makes sure to interact with her class and keeps them engaged. To do this she may have the class take some sort of brain break or will have them come up to the board to answer questions. She does a great job of explaining where her answers come from to make sure the class understands what’s happening. “She teaches visually which helps me a lot,” sophomore Ryker Cole said.
She is also the advisor of the Earth Club. In this club, they take care of the environment and are currently setting up wooden duck nesting boxes.
Outside of school, she likes to garden, golf and bake. Her favorite thing to do is golf even though she says she’s horrible at it. “I love golfing because I go with people I adore,” Overocker said. She likes to garden because she enjoys that feeling of accomplishment when her plants have grown and her yard looks beautiful. She often bakes sourdough but will sometimes make breakfast bars or cookies.
Overocker decided to start teaching when she was in 8th grade. During the summer between 8th grade and freshman year she taught a VBS class to some elementary students. “I vividly remember saying to the kids, “I don’t get it, explain it to me,” and they lit up and started talking. I honestly knew then that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Overocker said. She graduated at 32 with a husband and kids and a teaching certificate.
