A program filled with creating new leaders also helps ensure that the playing fields are evened out. Future Farmers of America gives young women and other students the chance to see what the agriculture field holds for them.
One conference in FFA is the Women Change the Face of the Agriculture Conference that aims to aid young women discover the many paths they could go into. The conference took place April 10 at Joliet Junior College. Some students who attended were freshman Irelynn McAlpine, junior Lexi Sawin, and senior Celie Thomas. “My favorite memory of the conference was just spending time with people, I care about,” Thomas said. During this conference, students learn from industry leaders and gain confidence. Students also get to participate in different workshops, hear from guest speakers and meet others that share similar interests. The conference further emphasizes leadership and growth with activities that focus on teamwork and communication skills.
FFA is a student-led organization that encourages students to learn through hands-on shops, classroom instruction or supervised agricultural experience projects. Through these projects they learn real-world business skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing and sustainability. Junior Lexi Sawin operates Lexi’s Sweet Treats as her SAE. “Through this project, Lexi has gained real-world experience in entrepreneurship, marketing and customer service,” agriculture teacher Sierra Walter said.
“The women conference was really good. They showed us how many careers women can have in Ag,” Sawin said. Overall, the conference was successful for FFA with many memorable moments.
