Hear ye, hear ye; gather around to learn of the contestants sent to the land of Illinois Valley to design computer concepts. On Monday, March 16 the CAD class, taught by computer teacher Janelle Nordtvedt, sent CAD students to the IDEA regional CAD competition at IVCC where most of Ottawa’s competitors placed third or higher.
At this competition, students were placed into divisions: 3D CAD Modeling, Introductory CAD, 3D Machine CAD, Assembly Modeling and Architectural 3D CAD. Students were tasked with either modeling or drawing a given shape or figure based on two views of the shape and two lengths and given two hours to complete their module. After the two hours, the students ran their designs through a program to calculate the volume of their shape to find out whose was closest to the original.
In the 3D CAD Modeling division, senior Lucas Conley placed third. In the Introductory CAD division, sophomore Alex Ruiz placed first; sophomore LJ Lee placed second and senior Wyatt Quinn placed third. In the 3D Machine CAD division, junior Eli Jeppson placed first. Junior Wes Weatherford placed second and senior Kathy Perez Marin placed third. “It was very fast-paced and nerve-wracking, but it was much better than I had anticipated. It was such a good experience, so I would go again,” Marin said. In the Assembly Modeling division, junior
Maverick Burress placed first, junior Donovan Smith placed second and junior Logan Cottingham placed third. Lastly, in the Architectural 3D CAD division, senior Kaleigh Bivens placed first. Lee went onto state on April 11 in the Introductory CAD division where he was given a new project to complete where he finished second. “It was a great way to meet some really smart people. I really liked just talking to people when we weren’t testing; it was very enjoyable,” Lee said, “I would definitely recommend doing CAD.” Other attendees include senior Joseph Liebhart, junior Jack Carrol, and senior James Koppenhoefer.
