Have you thought about your future career after high school? If not, in March there will be a fair for upper class students to get you thinking about your future with the help from Ashley Carls, a teacher who has taught at OHS for over 20 years.
Carls and Counselor Emily Pytel organize the annual with the help of four senior classes. It is a way for students to explore the possibilities outside of school and be active within the school community. It will take place on March 18 this year with over 50 businesses attending to talk to junior and senior students. Some say it is the highlight of their year. “It is such a wonderful day to look forward to, and students really enjoy planning, raising money, working and carrying out this day,” Carls said.
OHS does not shy away from giving their students access to resources to prepare for the future, and career fair is just the beginning. “OHS is lucky to have students put on such an opportunistic event that opens students’ eyes to their future that is so near,” Carls said. She started the career fair four years ago with the help of retired counselor Melissa Basil Senior Kaylee Santoy said, “I’m really looking forward to see all the careers that come to the career fair because they always offer something new.”
Carls wants students to be excited for the fair and better understand what it is all about. “Seeing my students put on such an amazing event for their peers is the best part,” Carls said about her favorite part of the career fair. With the impact of the career fair, students can find jobs to apply for that same day. This allows students to have better access to nearby businesses that are hiring. Over the years the career fair has gotten bigger and busier due to the generous efforts of Carls and Pytel.
If you are struggling with what to do after high school, consider stopping by the cafeteria to get a glimpse of several different careers. We hope to see you there.
