The holidays are a big time for everyone, including our amazing students who create art. Every year the art classes’ students compete to make holiday cards. The winners have their cards printed and sent out to members of the school and community.
Every year the art class students are prompted to make cards that depict any sort of holiday imagery. From snow globes to Christmas lights, many designs have been submitted since the start of the tradition in the early 2000s. “The cards are a great platform of us to share the talents of our students with individuals who may not be aware of how talented our art students are,” art teacher Kevin Olesen said. The students are encouraged to make the cards using any sort of tool. May it be pastels or colored pencils, the limit to their creativity is nonexistent. The students enjoy making these cards for the school and for themselves.
The competition is a way for the students to do an assignment and have fun with it. The cards that win are printed for the OTHS Board of Education and the rest of administration. The winners this year are Junior Charlie White, Junior Marissa Barrientos, Senior Marr Walker, and Junior Reese Purcell. White made a lamppost with a wreath. Barrientos made a candle with a wreath around it. Walker made a card with Christmas lights and Purcell made a snow globe. “I like having the ability to make something,” sophomore Jayden Pannell said.
