Is eating breakfast really that important? Many believe that it is not, but many studies have shown that eating breakfast can be beneficial. After school snacks can also be a helpful way to fill up your stomach if you eat the right things.
Rush University Medical Center conducted some research, ultimately showing that starting your day off with a nutritious meal has many benefits. “If you start with a healthy, satisfying meal in the morning you’re less apt to nibble on less nutritious things during the day, which we often do out of hunger—you grab the first or easiest thing in front of you,” clinical nutrition professor Christy C. Tangney said.
While eating a nutritious breakfast is good for you, it is not always ideal to make pancakes or a breakfast burrito before school. Sometimes it is the easy things that leave you content. Foods like fruits, yogurt, toast and oatmeal are common, nutritious foods to eat quickly in the morning.
Breakfast bars are very commonly taken on the go because they are prepackaged and normally do not make a mess. They can be quick to eat and will fill you up. Many brands have a variety to choose from, all with different ingredients that make the bars unique from one another. Another breakfast food that is common with lots of variety is cereal. Whether you like cereal with or without milk, there is no denying that it is a classic breakfast food. Sophomore Breckin Winter likes Cinnamon Toast Crunch because of the taste. “I like it because of the cinnamon and sugar on it; it’s the perfect cereal,” Winter said.
In the cafeteria, there are fruits such as bananas, and there are also foods like muffins and burritos. These are only a few of the things that are available in the morning, other things like cookies and smoothies are also available. There is even a coffee menu, providing various kinds of tasty, caffeinated drinks.
After school snacks are an important topic as well. It is not always healthy to eat a ton of junk food between lunch and dinner. Although when you are hungry it can be hard to resist. It is recommended that if you’re to eat after-school snacks at all, you should be filling your body with nutritious things.
According to Wonderopolis, some snacks that are good for you include fruits and vegetables, crackers and cheese, smoothies, yogurt cups, rice cakes and more. “Healthy snacks provide nutrients, encourage healthy eating habits, and help prevent a wide range of illnesses.”
Although staying nutritious with your meals is ideal for a lot of people, there is nothing wrong with eating some processed foods. They taste good because they tend to be low in nutritional value. Sophomore Josue Tapia says that Flaming Hot Funyuns are one of his favorite chips to eat. “The spice tastes really good and I can really enjoy it, I always find myself going back for more,” Tapia said.
