Pause that song to look at this. You are never going to believe how listening to music while learning affects you positively.
You may realize that many teachers don’t allow you to have your headphones in during class, this is because they believe it to be distracting. Yet at certain times music can be an asset to you in many ways. According to a Harvard study, “Music has been shown to activate some of the broadest and most diverse networks of the brain.” That shows that music works with many parts of your brain and, in turn, opens it up too many different thoughts, and ideas.
“Music is the best thing ever. I can’t get through school without it; I’d cry.” Freshman Amari Molina said. Music can help you think more creatively, and thoroughly, both of which are beneficial when learning. “Music activates both the left and right brain at the same time, and activation of both hemispheres can maximize learning and improve memory,” a Florida study indicated. Music can motivate you and uplift you to get things done. Junior Gracie Hall said, “I think music can focus your brain and can lead to less distractions from the outside world. I personally get more done when music is playing.”
Music doesn’t just help you learn but can also benefit your well-being and overall mental health. Good headspace is needed to let in any new information. Harvard studies also said, “Music listeners had higher scores for mental well-being and slightly reduced levels of anxiety and depression compared to people overall.” In elementary school teachers would always show educational music videos, and even sometimes they are shown in high school. That just goes to show that music can teach us many things. It can share powerful messages, and information that can help people out throughout their day.
