With school starting and halftime shows beginning, one lucky artist was selected to be September’s artist of the month. The artist picked for this title was senior Bethany Polega. Polega said, “I’m grateful that I was recognized because I put a lot of work and dedication into the arts.”
Playing in the band has always been her passion, and it is what brought her to becoming drum major for this year’s talented marching band. Polega began playing clarinet in her grade school band in fourth grade and has participated in band ever since. Being drum major means leading the other marching band members in the conducting of each song played. Polega said, “I was definitely excited. For the last four years I have watched the drum majors do their things, and now I’m excited to get to be that role model for them.”
Fellow drum major senior Malcolm Grentencord said, “It’s fun to run everything, and it’s nice to have this shared experience in our last year.”
Even her music director Andrew Jacobi is proud of who she is as a drum major. “She is very responsible with everything that she does. She is always prepared and her playing abilities show that she is a very strong musician, and so that’s all part of what got her to be drum major this year.”
Polega said, “I definitely want to continue playing in college, and I am planning on being a music teacher. I haven’t decided for band or choir yet, but I want to keep it in my life.”
Jacobi says to be a drum major students need to demonstrate they are capable of being on time and fulfilling all the duties necessary. Jacobi then said, “Bethany pretty consistently demonstrates all of that and she has such a great work ethic.”
