“Wicked” is the film adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the “Wicked” books which is a prequal to “The Wizard of Oz.” But the question is, was “Wicked” robbed of Best Original Score and did Ariana Grande deserve Best Supporting Actress?
“Wicked” is a whimsical but dark musical directed by Jon M. Chu that shows a fresh and new perspective on “The Wizard of Oz characters”, mostly surrounding the misunderstood green witch, Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo and Glinda, the bubbly witch, played by Ariana Grande. The movie is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” about the how the untold events of the early classic came to be and reveling plot twist and secrets about the original story as well. It shows the other side of Elphaba’s story and how she became the Wicked Witch of the West. It’s nostalgia for older musical fans, its electric and powerful soundtrack, the stunning set and the talented actors are what made it such a big hit. “As undeniably crowd-pleasing as “Wicked” is in its big moments, these smaller and more intimate details are just as magical,” Christy Lemire on rogerebert.com said.
Some people would argue that the movie’s main competition, “Emilia Perez,” did not earn those Oscars. While that movie had the right intentions, I agree with the people who think this movie did not deserve the awards and nominations. “Wicked” had a massive amount of depth, emotion and creativity which was clear throughout the whole movie while “Emilia Perez” lacked that feeling and art. “The film Wicked is the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, especially with Jon M. Chu. The art and symbolism in this movie with the path of separating it from musical, while still staying true to the storyline is pure magic,” sophomore Paisley Smith said.
Ariana Grande clearly embodies the character Glinda very well. She has mentioned multiple times in interviews how she decided to “forget” her old self that everyone knows and love for Glinda. By doing this, she separates herself from that persona to become a better actress and so the audience sees her as Glinda and not a popstar who got the role just cause she’s popular. Her performance in the movie is enough to win Best Supporting Actress. She clearly worked hard for the role and should be rewarded for her efforts.
To sum it all up, “Wicked” and everyone who worked hard on this movie, were robbed. Not only is the movie enjoyable story-wise but from an artist perspective. The movie deserved many rewards and more.
