When the towering 6’7” blonde giant stands up as number 23, the other team is surely scared. Owen Sanders is a proud member of the basketball team. He has been playing for 12 years and is very happy to be part of the Varsity team. He works hard to stay in shape for his sport, often being at the gym to condition himself. Sanders is also on the football team in the fall season, which is just as physically strenuous, but he doesn’t mind. Sanders enjoys basketball more, since he has more passion for it, but finds each sport as hard as the other and yet makes them look easy.
“I don’t dedicate any of my baskets to anyone. I just get back on defense and hope we win,” Sanders said. His favorite team to play against is LP, despite the current losing streak against them. He likes the long-generated rivalry between the schools and likes the atmosphere it brings to that game.
After senior Aric Threadgill had to stop playing for the team due to physical stress, Sanders had to take his place on the team. “Owen has definitely stepped up as both a leader and a player on the team since my absence,” Threadgill said.
“Owen is a high-character kid who’s worked very hard in basketball and developed into a very good player” Coach Mark Cooper said. As the basketball season is ending and the football season won’t start again until next year, feel free to check out Sanders in the band, where he is second chair trombone. His fans are eager to see him again next year, but before then, catch him at the band concerts.
